MGM National Harbor – Resort and Casino National Harbor, where you can play and earn. MGM Resorts International obtained a license in December 2013 to construct a US$925 million resort, later raised to US$1.2 billion at National Harbor. The firm won the license after competing with proposals from Penn National Gaming to build a US$700 million site at its Rosecroft Raceway and Greenwood Racing to develop a US$761 million facility along Maryland Route 210. Construction on MGM National Harbor started in April 2014 and opened on December 8, 2016.
On June 26, 2018, a seven-year-old child suffered traumatic brain damage while visiting the casino. Due to a botched installation of a mechanism intended to regulate the electrical flow to the rail lights, Zynae Green received an electric shock and was left wheelchair-bound. Despite the family’s cries for assistance, MGM security did not start resuscitation, MGM saying “the guards followed procedure responding to the situation and concluded that Zynae was breathing and did not require CPR.” Prince George’s County Police Officers began resuscitation upon arrival. The event sparked an FBI investigation, and the family has not been paid more than a year after the occurrence.
The Challenge – MGM National Harbor
They developed a desire for “white architecture to respect the marble buildings in the District of Columbia. The client’s concept called for a prominent tower inspired by the Washington Monument.
The Design Solution – MGM National Harbor
MGM National Harbor takes inspiration from the power and timeless characteristics of the capital’s architectural heritage. It achieves its colossal size via a single architectural gesture: a huge plinth or foundation supporting the main program components above. HKS designers structured it along a central spine — like the National Mall – linking one series of visitor experiences to the next. Guests approach the home via an oval conservatory drenched in natural light. Restaurants and high-end shops surround the 80-foot towering conservatory.
Rising 24-stories, the hotel tower is the project’s highlight. Its angled and knife-like edge evokes the powerful vertical shape of the Washington Monument. The tower is turned 33 degrees off the project’s axis to be parallel with the National Mall, strengthening the connection between the site and the center of the District.
A planted roof deck offers a meeting place and a large area for indoor-outdoor eating. A digital façade, cantilevered from the tip of the plinth, provides visual vitality and corporate identification. A dramatic, arching canopy embraces the plaza to link visitors to unimpeded and panoramic vistas of the Potomac River and the Capital.
